Ollie Cafe

Cousin and I walked past this cafe when we were shopping around Somerset area. The underground, called Orchard Gateway, has been done up and ready for visitors to travel from 313, Orchard Central to Orchard Emerald. It's nice to see some unique shops that sell different things like vintage accessories and soap making.

Then we went hungry and decided to sit down for a drink here..

And without having to ask, the waitress served us with water immediately once we sat down. Great service!

Small humble cafe..

Love my Pina Colada ($6.90 on the right), it really tasted like the real Pina Colada without coconut milk and alcohol..yummy..
Iced Lychee Mint Tea ($5.90 on the left) was slightly bitter but had minty after taste.

My cousin wanted an all-day breakfast so she ordered Sabsouska ($15.90) with chicken con carne, professionally cooked eggs, cheddar cheese, jalapeno, salad and toast. This dish was cheesy, , slightly spicy, the gravy was appetizing and the toasts were thick and crispy. But look at the oil!

My Hummus Salad ($10.90) with mesculun mix, olives, sun dried tomato, fresh tomato, cucumber, shallot and toast. I'm not a fan of sun dried tomato as it is very sour so I attacked the rest. The vegetables were fresh and portion was generous, so I couldn't finished at all. I love the Hummus texture, not salty not oily and it was nutty and had a hint of peas. Unlike my cousin's toasts, mine were thin but crispy too.

Overall, this cafe offers a short list of dishes but they are specially decorated and cooked to present good contrast of colors and textures. I do not mind trying their coffee again when I pass by next time.

Want to look for them? They are at 277 Orchard Road B2-10, Orchard Gateway Shopping Malls, Singapore 238858.

Bedrock

Have you ever passed by this restaurant whenever you walk from 313 to H&M and hoping that you will try it one day?

Yes, yes and yes for me. And my kind BFF brought me there!

Look so posh and romantic right?! It is not very expensive and the ambience is quite romantic..slightly quiet and dim inside. Everyone looks pretty :)

Because of the dim environment, my photos didn't do any justice, but I still want to share my experience there with you just in case you are keen to try out.

A big piece of pig leg welcomed me...love it!

The ambience romantic right? When I walked in, I couldn't help myself from straightening my back and walking in gracefully, this place just looked high class...

The staff there were very helpful and approachable too..great service. Don't be shy to ask if you are not sure about the menu..

On the house..I love to rub the garlic on my bread and sandwich the entire garlic clove!

If you do not like sour or dry wine, then this suits you. It's called Baby Doll on the menu at $15 per glass. Do try it!

Super fresh oysters..I swear that I've never had such fresh oysters before..forgot the price but if you love oysters, you should try it. It's juicy and smooth, with a hint of the sea...hmmmmmm..just a few drops of lemon and it can rock your mouth..

Bedrock smoked tomato soup ($14). They didn't joke about the tomato being smoked ok...kind of sour for me but my tomato-lover BFF liked it..

Bedrock mac n cheese ($18). This was highly recommended by the staff and it was really good! They included blue cheese and other cheeses into the soft macaroni..feels like home when I put a spoonful into my mouth..no other words can describe it other than "I'm home"...

Black Angus Striploin ($69)
Ok, I'm really sorry that this picture turned out to look like a black and white photo..my camera does not perform well under low light condition. Tried editing it the best I could without distorting it but failed. The steak was really big and thick, slightly dry but I guess it was because of the thickness. But hey, you will feel so sinful if it was greasy right?

Medium rare was really medium rare, nice....if you have eaten many steaks in your life, you should have the experience that it is either under or overcooked..but here they are professionals.

Finally, Creme Brulee! I like the caramelized skin but I tried to stop myself from finishing the cream with espresso kahlua because I was so full already!

Warning: You can either starve yourself for 2 days to come here or you bring a friend along 'cause the portion served is quite large.

So here are my views:
Ambience 3.5/5
Food 3.5/5
Service 3.5/5
Price AffordableToilet Availability 2/5 (sharing with the restaurant next door)

Coco Ichibanya

Japanese Curry Rice again!!

This time it was not on purpose too. We were loitering at 313 Somerset basement looking for cheap food to eat (well, not cheap after all once you see the prices below) and then we saw Coco Ichibanya at one quiet corner of the basement. The big plates of curry rice displayed in their shelf were waving at us..since there were seats and the noise level was tolerable, we headed in to try..

The place was quite pleasant - clean, good air ventilation, bright..

Sometimes I find Japanese are too detailed and slightly complicated in their food..or in fact, almost in everything.. Here we thought we can just point at the menu and the food will come, but no..we must:
first choose the curry dish we want,
then choose quantity of rice (with a price. you can also reduce your rice amount that comes with reduction of price too),
then you choose the spicy level (the max. is level 5, but technically it has 7 levels. First 2 levels are for children and level 0 for standard respectively. *roll eyes* level 0?!),
then choose to have extra toppings or not (with a price of course)

We chose Thin-sliced Boiled Beef Curry with additional sausages (for yours sincerely) and Beef Omelet Curry, both at spice level 2 - Hot. The service was really fast, made me worried abit and started imagine that all the food were actually cooked in the morning and they were reheated using microwave..just my thoughts..maybe Japanese has invented some machines that can pressure cook them in just 1 minute.

 Thin-sliced Boiled Beef Curry ($12.50 + $1 sausages)

Beef Omelet Curry ($14)

I find the sausages were very short (size does matter to me), tasted not that bad..but there were room for improvement. The Omelet curry was a so-so..it was like when you put a spoon of omelet curry rice into your mouth, you will just think, "hmm...ok this is egg, this is rice..oh, here is the beef.." somehow I couldn't taste the harmonization of the ingredients..I don't feel the must to eat them together. Same goes to the Thin-sliced boiled beef curry..

Well the plus points are the environment was alright but soft-talkers and easily-migraine people like me..there was funny jazz played in the background in medium volume - which was good. The other customers behaved themselves by not laughing or shouting loudly, the kids were tamed too..I was just lucky.

Here are my views:
Ambience 2.5/5
Food 2.5/5
Service 2.5/5
Price Slightly steep
Toilet Availability 0/5 (please use 313 Somerset's toilets)

Mon - Fri: 10:00 - 22:00
Sat - Sun & PH: 10:00 - 23:00

Next: Paradise Inn! Stay tuned!
