If you passed by Neil road, this unique house might have caught your attention.
This is Baba House, built possibly in the 1890s at 157 Neil Road, once home to descendants of 19th Century Chinese shipping tycoon Wee Bin, now owned and managed by Mr Wee Lin, the sixth-generation descendant of Wee Bin.
The house showcases rich culture of Peranakan community in terms of architecture, interiors and beliefs. I couldn't help but made an appointment to visit the house. Yes, visits are strictly by appointment only. You can either email to babahouse@nus.edu.sg or call 6227 5731. You will never regret the trip because the guide is extremely detailed and she is a Nyonya! She explained every reason behind the furniture, paintings, photos, tradition....It was like time traveling..I didn't want to leave the house.
Too bad I was only allowed to take photo of the facade and not the interior but you can get to see 2 interior images at http://www.nus.edu.sg/cfa/museum/about.php.
Don't be disappointed because Phoebe went to Peranakan Musuem to take some photos just to show you some typical Peranakan culture.
All proud to be Peranakans.
Beautiful Kebaya..I really admire their embroidery (two-sided!) and the vibrant color matching..being a Nyonya is really not easy!
Hand-beaded cases..
Look at the detailed carvings..
Bridal bed. The wedding would be held for a total of 12 days! So if the couple was too tired to consummate on the first night, they still had 11 more to go..hehe..but must make sure the bride had collected her virgin blood on a handkerchief to show her mother-in-law *sweat*
Wedding day.
Funeral. If you have weak heart, you can choose not to go into this section because it has mourning sound effects..
One thing I love about Nonya is you can have a big open concept kitchen!
If you want to know more about Peranakan, do drop by this Peranakan Museum at
39 Armenian Street, or check out their website at http://www.peranakanmuseum.org.sg/home/home.html. Singapore citizen has free admission!
Side track abit...Phoebe is on magazine!....Briefly..
Thank you Somali and Grazilia who looked me up on the internet and published my photo of Baba House on Complete Wellbeing. I'm really glad that friends in India are interested in Singapore's Baba House.
